What to know about discounts
The six points most often confused
Percentage discount
A percentage of the list price is deducted. 1,000 × 20% = 200 off, 800 final.
Chained discount
Successive discounts (dealer + campaign) are not added. 20% + 10% = 28% effective, not 30%.
Reverse (find the rate)
With two prices on a tag, rate = (Old − New) ÷ Old × 100. 1,000 → 850 = 15%.
Relation to VAT
On invoices the discount applies to the net base and VAT is computed on it; the result equals discounting the gross price.
Protect your margin
A discount larger than your margin means a loss. Set the maximum discount from cost + target margin.
Marketplace discounts
Marketplaces charge commission on the discounted price; check net earnings with the commission calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How is a discount calculated?
Discount amount = List price × Discount rate / 100. Discounted price = List price − Discount amount. For example, 20% off a 1,000 item: 1,000 × 0.20 = 200 discount, final price 800.
How are chained (successive) discounts calculated?
Rates are applied one after another, not added. 20% + 10% chained: 1,000 → 800 → 720. The effective rate is 28%, not 30%. Formula: 1 − (1 − r₁) × (1 − r₂).
How do I find the discount rate from the discounted price?
Discount rate = (List price − Discounted price) / List price × 100. If a 1,000 item sells for 850, the rate is (1,000 − 850) / 1,000 = 15%.
Is the discount applied to the VAT-inclusive or VAT-exclusive price?
On invoices the discount is applied to the net (VAT-exclusive) amount and VAT is calculated on the discounted base. On retail price tags the discount is shown on the VAT-inclusive price; the result is the same because VAT is proportional.
What is the difference between discount and rebate?
In everyday use they mean the same. "Rebate" is more common in trade and accounting contexts (dealer rebate, early-payment rebate), while "discount" is used in retail and campaigns.
